Another true crime junkie here. I've watched an INCREDIBLE amount of true crime episodes via cable and streaming. I'm pretty numb to it, which is a little creepy in itself.
You know what baffles me the most?? It's that enough murder and violence has occurred (mostly in America) that we, the untouched ones, could watch true crime episodes every day until we're dead. It's unfathomable if you think hard enough about it.
Wow, that's scary! I was the same, almost numb to it and then one day I just couldn't bear to see/hear/read a second more of it. Maybe that will pass but for now, I'm sticking to the lighter, fluffier stuff.
This is so interesting because I'm also a true crime junkie. (I've written about that too.) Do you know about Doon Mackichan's work - she campaigns against dead-woman crime dramas and wrote a brilliant piece for the New Statesman in 2014 called Enough Is Enough. Danya Kukafka's thoughtful 'Notes on an execution' is in a similar vein (three women affected by the crimes of a Ted Bundy alike serial killer).
Thanks so much for introducing me to Doon, I just read that article and iām so glad I did. It really validates how Iām feeling. For the past few months when looking for movies and shows to watch, and someone suggests one that involves a storyline about physical or psychological abuse toward a woman or women, I canāt bring myself to watch it. Reading Doonās work has given me more insight into why this deep seated revulsion has finally surfaced and that itās ok to introduce a zero tolerance policy which I think is the answer for me for now.
